Chapter 19: The Warl of the Neflin
A sudden jolt alerted the company of travellers to the fact that they had arrived in the Lorn Forest. And as the sphere, used for transportation through the skies that spread out above the Warl of the Dead, began to dissolve, the company wondered about those things they didn’t know about each other, things that would impact their respective plans. What did Mar’Gul mean when she said she had not always been the person she now was? Was Jeaf sufficiently prepared to challenge the evil that lived in Cara Lorn? Was he fully apprised of the dangers that awaited him there? Could the Mar’Gul and Hammer Bearer trust each other?
But the time for speculation was quickly coming to a close. It was time to enter the Warl of the Neflin.
Just like in Mar’Gul’s hut back in the Warl of the Brie'Shen, three braziers were strategically positioned around the huge sphere that had been used for transportation. These came into clearer focus as the giant orb’s light continued to wane. And when it did, all found that they were seated in a stone-lined depression in the floor of what must be another structure like the one they had departed from.
Without being asked, Dog hurried over to stand in the hut’s doorway. Like its twin they left behind, there were no other windows or openings in the hut, save a smoke hole at the structure’s apex. Poking his massive head beyond the large leather flap that acted as the dwelling’s door, the hound searched the forest beyond and the village that was scattered throughout it. Fully alert, Dog was acting like he expected trouble. But whether he expected the trouble to come from Ab’Don’s agents or the Neflin themselves, no one knew for sure.
As if to explain Dog’s actions, the Mar Gul said, "You’re now in the home of the Neflin.” Like a mother who was explaining how dangerous the local vipers were, the old woman continued. “Walk softly and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Don’t speak hastily. And above all else, show no fear. The Neflin are good at spotting weakness, and the weak do not survive long in this place.”
Satisfied her instructions were being heard, Mar’Gul stepped past Dog and disappeared outside after saying, “Wait here.”
Once the old woman was gone, Jeaf took time to look about before tending to his father. A single bed sat near the wall to his left. A thin mattress, laying at its feet, must have been where Dog slept. Shelves lined the circular wall, filled with jars of every size and description. These contained herbs, minerals, dried insect and animal parts, everything one would need to practice medicine or work a little magic.
A much larger structure than its counterpart, this must be Mar’Gul’s home, Jeaf reasoned. An old sword and dagger, hanging on a wall between a set of shelves validated the Woodswane’s assumption. Two cots that sat opposite Mar’Gul’s bed made Jeaf wonder if the place was used as a hospital as well.
